FINWE, a Finnish mobile R&D expert company, announced a software solution that enables viewing high resolution Ultra HD 3D 360 videos with a smartphone inserted into a head-mounted display frame, such as vrAse, Durovis Dive or similar. The concept lets users have a truly immersive viewing experience through their common smartphone.

“Recent development in mobile devices enables us to provide truly immersive experiences to smartphone users via affordable VR goggles. Latest devices have high resolution displays, fast processors, built in sensors, high speed wireless communications and built in storage – all the required elements built in a compact form that can be easily coupled with HMD frame. Boosted by Facebook acquisition of Oculus Rift, mobile VR will definitely be next important step in mobile evolution.” said Juha Kela, Finwe CEO Finwe’s player engine has been tested with Nexus 5 Android phone running 360 videos with stunning 8K Ultra HD resolution – this corresponds to the resolution of sixteen (16) Full HD screens. Due to the additional detail level, perspective and feel of depth are far more impressive, than in other solutions at the market today.

As an extension to the traditional 360 video playback, Finwe also released a demonstration of highly interactive mobile solution supporting dynamic interactive hotspots on 360 video.

Hotspots can present videos, text, web pages and other dynamic content overlaid on top of the video. All the presented material can be pulled from existing web services without the need to update or modify the mobile application.

“We see the 360 video as a canvas or a background for interactive UI elements. Objects and controls in panoramic video are easily recognizable to viewers and they see it natural to explore and interact with them. Hotspot technology will be especially useful in interactive commercials and marketing, training materials and of course in tourism.” said Juha Kela.

Moreover, Finwe, ATEME, and Kolor, partnered to deliver an end-to-end live broadcast solution that covers the complete production chain needed to deliver compelling 360 live video content to the mobile tablet and smartphone users worldwide.

Collaboration is done under shared brand LiveSphere.
